What Makes an AI “Agentic”
The term “agentic” gets thrown around a lot, but it comes down to four capabilities.
Autonomy: An agentic AI doesn’t wait for constant instructions. You give it a goal like “Research competitive pricing for our product category and draft a positioning memo” and it determines the steps needed to get there. It queries databases, pulls external data, synthesizes findings and produces deliverables without requiring you to micromanage each action.
Reasoning: This is what separates agents from simple automation scripts. When something goes wrong (an API fails or a file is missing), agentic systems adapt. They troubleshoot, adjust their approach and try alternative paths. A simple script stops at the first unexpected condition; an agent works around it.
Multi-step execution transforms single-turn responses into complete workflows. While traditional AI excels at isolated tasks like summarizing a document, translating text or generating code snippets, agentic AI chains these capabilities together. It can research a specification, write code, run tests, document changes and submit them for review, all in one continuous workflow. Each step feeds context into the next, so the agent’s work stays coherent across the full sequence. Individual tasks don’t happen in isolation.
Environmental awareness: Agents are grounded in real systems. They don’t just generate text in a chat window. They interact with codebases, databases, APIs and production systems. They also read config files, check system states and trigger deployments. Compute Costs Dropped and Orchestration Improved
Compute costs dropped while orchestration frameworks matured. Agents need sustained inference to work toward goals, and cheaper compute now makes this economically viable. Frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph and CrewAI provide the scaffolding agents need: managing long-running workflows, coordinating multiple tools and recovering from failures. Standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) now define how agents connect to external services securely, giving the ecosystem a shared interface layer.
This moment is similar to the “cloud moment” of the mid-2000s. The core technologies (virtualization, networking, remote access) existed independently for years before converging into something much larger. The pieces enabling agentic AI existed independently until their convergence made autonomous software agents practical at scale.
Where Agentic AI Stands Today
Agentic AI is already delivering results in specific domains. In software development, GitHub’s Copilot coding agent accepts a GitHub issue, researches the repository, writes an implementation, runs tests and opens a pull request for human review. The developer assigns the issue and comes back to a finished PR. Google’s Big Sleep agent, built by DeepMind and Project Zero, identified a zero-day SQLite memory corruption flaw (CVE-2025-6965) that was already known to threat actors and cut off the attack before exploitation could begin. In customer operations, agents resolve tickets by pulling customer data, checking order status across multiple systems and drafting responses that follow company guidelines. Data analysis workflows that once required manual orchestration across multiple tools now run autonomously from question to insight.
These initial successes point toward broader adoption. Agents are already coordinating software releases end-to-end, managing cloud infrastructure in response to real-time demand and running compliance audits that previously took a team days to complete manually. The pattern is consistent: any workflow that requires gathering information from multiple systems, making a judgment call and acting on it is a candidate for agentic automation.
Despite the promise, real challenges remain:
- Reliability: Agents have to consistently achieve goals without creating more problems than they solve. A system that works 95% of the time still fails disruptively in production.
- Oversight: Organizations need new ways for humans to monitor agent actions without micromanaging them. The goal is auditability: knowing what an agent did, why it did it and whether the outcome was correct, without requiring approval at every step.

- Coordination: Teams need collaboration models where people set the goals and agents handle execution. This means defining which actions are safe to automate fully and which require human sign-off based on risk.
